Worth assessing the 'Bus Factor' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_factor when considering where to invest your time and effort in open source efforts. Times change, individual priorities change, as they should. A project or core associated with a specific individual has a very low Bus Factor, progress is tied to that individual. Not a big deal as most of this is hobbyist based learning, but best to seek to maximize the longevity of your time and learning investment I think.
