just an FYI....

Years ago, some may remember Scott Edwards who became rather synonymous with "serial LCD" backpacks. Here

A British company later made a serially driven OLED (Winstar) using a PICAXE. These are still available when the cost justifies their use:

Distributors are often available that are easier than ordering from the UK directly.

When high BAUD is not necessary but high-contrast, no backlighting, and only 3-wires ... these may be just the device.
